Pumpkin Preschool Theme: Exploring Pumpkins

This week I purchased two mini pumpkins for my daughters for our Pumpkin Preschool Theme. Missy Mu-Mu (aged 4) had been begging me to make a jack-o-lantern. It actually turned out to be a wonderfull sensory experience for Sopapilla (aged 2) too.
I started the fun by having Missy Mu-Mu read the book, “Pumpkin”, to her younger sister. She reads at a second grade level, and I find having her read out loud to her sister helps develop fluidity without any pressure from me. I liked this book because it gave a simple explanation of the life cycle of a pumpkin, and how people       use them.

I then presented the girls with a pumpkin each (I had already cut the tops off). They gasped when they lifted off the top and saw the “treasure” inside! Sopapilla actually gasped, “SEEDS, WOW MOMMY LOOK SEEDS!!”. They couldn’t wait to dig in and explore the insides of the pumpkin. Missy Mu-Mu thought it smelt, “like a yucky orange”.
After they finished scooping the pulp and seeds out, I was left in charge of the carving. I had invited Missy Mu-Mu to draw a face on for me, but she politely declined. I have to say for my first ever jack-o-lanterns I am impressed with myself!

We kept the seeds and roasted them for an hour in olive oil and salt at 250 degrees for a treat for later (they’ll for Daddy really). I have to say I really enjoyed this activity and look forward to doing it next year with the girls!
